Mountain Tribe Spiral Small Earrings
These earrings reveal a jewellery tradition preeminent for its beauty and deep historic significance. Gemstones of different kinds - aquamarines, sapphires, diamonds, and garnets - have been uniquely arranged in these small adornments, giving each of them its own character. They are about 2 centimetres long.
The rich symbolism of jewellery from Southeast Asia can be traced back to local beliefs and animist religion. Many ornaments are believed to consolidate magical protective powers. Double spirals which have inspired these earrings, are supposed to be elements of the Dong Son culture from northern Vietnam. It is characterised by meandering lines, circles, rhombus, and braiding motifs.
