The women from the region of Azawagh wear an adornment called Washak attached to their hair. The Washak is made of leather and has a triangular shape. Textile fringes with small shells hang down from it. The dangling shells move and sound to the rhythm of the steps. Washak actually means decoration that hangs. Besides being a beautiful adornment, it actually serves 2 other purposes: It holds the hair in place and also acts as a talisman. The Azawagh collection with its decorative fringes seeks to reflect and highlight this moving Tuareg hair adornment.
